Description: A project of the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and Google, this project's ultimate goal is to put online as many of NARA's 114,000 films and 37,000 videos as possible. The first phase, launched February 24, 2006, made available 101 films from the archives' collections, including the earliest film held there, Carmencita-Spanish Dance from 1894; government newsreels documenting World War II; NASA films on the history of its space program: and documentaries on the history of national and state parks. Description: The North American Immigrant database provides detailed information on more than 2,100 people (totaling approximately 100,000 pages of information) and attempts to provide a unique and personal view of what it meant to immigrate to America and Canada between 1800 and 1950. The database is comprised of personal narratives including letters, diaries, pamphlets, autobiographies, and oral histories, much of the material being previously unpublished. Several thousand pages of Ellis Island Oral History interviews, indexed and searchable for the first time, are included. The materials begin around 1840 and extend to the present, focusing heavily on the period from 1920 to 1980. People from many countries are represented, including more recent waves of immigrants from Latin America and Asia. In selected cases, users can to hear the actual audio voices of the immigrants or view images of their scrapbooks.
